Five steps to implement IoT in aviation companies

In order to get here, though, you’ll need organisational and management support. It may seem insurmountable to create a culture of trial and error, or experimentation in large established companies, such as those that make up the airline industry.

Deloitte, however, has broken the process down into five management steps that you can follow.

Ideation and strategy - your business strategy should be determining your targets and areas of improvement, but use ideation workshops and ecosystem contacts to figure out how to address these areas, going beyond the norm and truly innovating.
Pilot and roadmap - the idea is to “ learn fast “ and iterate as you go along, overplaying is often the death of innovation. With that said, of course, a governance plan, structure, risk assessment, and an analysis of capabilities will have to be in place. Just be sure to keep planning from delaying you into inaction.
Capture, store, and process - for IoT initiatives to be successful, you’ll need a way to get ahold of the right data, process it and store it - using edge commuting and cloud technology - and finally, you’ll need to be able to analyse it.
Scale and deploy - once you have proof of concept, pay mind to privacy rules, security and global capabilities, all critical factors determining scalability.
Operate - measure performance and overall contribution to business metrics. Now improve, repeat and measure again.

Adopt a fail-fast mentality to mitigate risks

IoT is an idea that will reshape the world around us, but not every innovation will be a success at first, if ever. Going forward with IoT, Arjan de Jong agrees that companies should embrace potential failures, learn from them, and use that experience to move forward with new initiatives.

»As mentioned previously, small steps are safe and practical if you want to mitigate the risks. It’s vital that companies adopt a fail-fast mentality and realise that IoT may not always be successful. Accept that failures will occur. But whilst accepting failures, ensure that initiatives fail fast. This may be helped by incremental innovations,« he explains and adds:

»Be opportunistic. Use an opportunistic, meandering strategy. Let your IoT implementation strategy be driven by a tech push and operational pull. What this means is, if the technology is ready, improve your operations with an IoT solution. However, if your technology isn’t ready, choose another operational area to improve with another IoT solution.«
